What I Like About the Book
It’s The Manager is not designed for you to read linearly, chapter by chapter. The book is broken up into five sections - Strategy, Culture, Employment Brand, Boss to Coach, and Future of Work – so you can quickly navigate to sections needed to help you address problems as they arise.
The appendix portion of the book is another treasure. Each one has a focus, including Leading with Your Strengths, The 12 Elements of Great Management, The Relationship Between Engagement at Work and Organizational Outcomes, The Relationship Between Strengths-Based Employee Development and Organizational Outcomes, and Gallup Meta-Analytic Study of Managerial Hiring and Development Profiles. My favorite of the five is the first one. Leading with Your Strengths covers the CliftonStrength themes. In short, these themes discuss how to supervise, identify, and challenge those with certain traits. Leadership is not one size fits all. This section does a great job of highlighting that and will propel you to be the leader you know you can be.
In Closing
It’s The Manager is filled with notes and references for further learning opportunities. If you already serve in a leadership role or aspire to become one, this book will help you maximize your and your organization's potential.
