Some novels reveal stories through thought-provoking ideas and topics that sometimes leave the reader feeling a little uncomfortable or squeamish. If you can handle descriptive acts of violence (including sexual violence), hate crimes, and explicit language, I recommend these three titles.
Razorblade Tears written by S.A. Cosby, is a Southern Noir novel. Ike Randolph, a former convict, is told by police his son, Isiah, along with his husband Derek, were brutally murdered. At the funeral, he meets Buddy Lee, Derek’s father. After the initial refusal on Ike’s side, Ike and Buddy Lee partner up to seek revenge for their son’s death.
After That Night written by Karin Slaughter, is the tenth book in the Will Trent series. Dr. Sara Linton, Will’s fiancé, was working in the ER when a woman crashed into a parked ambulance. When Dani Cooper, advises Dr. Linton about what happened to her, an eerie feeling consumes Dr. Linton, realizing it sounds like something she experienced fifteen years earlier.
John Woman written by Walter Mosley. The book follows a young Cornelius Jones's transformation into John Woman. Jones must cover his ill father’s job at a local silent film theater. During Cornelius’s time at the theater, multiple events changed his life. As an adult, Professor John Woman teaches alternative versions of history classes. He soon realizes that he could run from his past but cannot hide from it.
