For as long as I can remember, I have found weather fascinating. And I love when I find good weather books. Most of these are fiction, but there is one nonfiction in the You May Also Like section. So pick your poison and jump in. The weather’s fine!
I should start this one by saying the I have not read Carly Fortune before. I’ve seen her books and they always intrigue me, but for some reason, I never pull the trigger. Until now. I couldn’t pass up one called, Our Perfect Storm. And the blurb said it was two friends on vacation, surfing (you know I’m a sucker for surfing), and reconnecting after several years apart. Frankie was supposed to be on her honeymoon, but her fiance called off the wedding the night before, so now it’s up to George to pick up the pieces. I have to been honest, since this is a post about storms, I was disappointed in the actual amount of weather in this one. There were some good moments - walking into the redwood forest in the rain comes to mind - but I didn’t get one big storm moment. This was a good read. It just needed more weather.
Um…big storms that shoot purple lightning? Yes please! I mean, I don’t think I’d enjoy getting blitzed by a strike, but maybe I’d be cool like Poet and able to absorb them. Poet lives in the dystopian world of Manhattan after The Warming Age wrecked the planet. (I think they would say we are living in The Warming Age.) Now they have to pledge one of four houses in order to remain in Society and each house has a duty to protect the population. Poet’s dad runs House Fiama, and he is responsible for keeping the people safe. But if anybody finds out that Poet is a Keeper (i.e. someone who can absorb the lightning), she would be in mortal danger because that is not something society tolerates. Also she feels smothered in House Fiama and is ready for the new challenge of being a Storm Breaker. I really enjoyed this read. It reminded me of the Divergent series, but better because there were purple storms. Be warned: it does end on a bit of a cliffhanger, so be prepared for that. Great read though.
A while ago, my library friend Beth mentioned that NPL was ordering this book. She knew I am somewhat of a huge weather nerd and wanted to me make sure I knew about it. I was so excited I put my hold in right away. And then I waited…and waited…and waited. Ahhh! I wanted to read this one SO MUCH! And friends, I’m happy to report that it did not disappoint. Sloane is usually a wedding photographer, but in April and May you can find her chasing storms on the Plains. When fellow chaser, Wes, punches one too many hooks and trashes his car, Sloane volunteers to let him ride with her, even though they are competing for the same photography cover contest. Do I wish there had been more storm chasing in the book - yes, I do. I probably always will. But I have to say that what was included - weather-wise - was accurate and no one took shelter under an overpass, so that’s a win for me. Thanks to Beth for letting me know about this. It was a great, stormy read.
Because I knew that I was going to be writing this post, I have been on the look out for great storm books. So when I walked by this on the shelf, you know my curiosity was piqued. People keep dying during hurricanes in St. Medard’s Bay, Alabama. Not completely unusual, but when there is also a murder trial attached to one of them, that makes it much more interesting. I don’t always go for thrillers like this, but I have to say that I really enjoyed it. We got several hurricane stories as we looked back in time to events surrounding the Rosalie Hotel. I thought the balance of weather to story in this one was good. I didn’t know what I was getting when I picked this up, but I was pleasantly surprised. Once I hit the midway point, I couldn’t put it down. If you are looking for a little mystery with your weather, this one is for you.
I don’t know how I was lucky enough to get two storm chasing books that came out in the same month after not having any for a long, long time. But here we are. In this one, weather influencer Dr. Quincy Monroe has three million followers and she loves her job educating the public about storms. Except for one thing. Sebastian Dunn. Her best friends brother and a meteorological bigwig at ABC. When he comes back to Florida for a project, they are forced to work together during hurricane season. Overall, I enjoyed this one too. I will say that it is a little more Twister-esque than the previous chaser book. I haven’t really heard much about folks chasing big tornadoes in Florida and I’m pretty sure that no matter how tired you are you probably wouldn’t fall asleep in the heart of a Cat 5 hurricane. Just saying. That said, the characters were great and I’d love it if this became a series.
