Netflix is great, but do you know where Netflix gets a lot of its content? That’s right: books. And do you know who has books? Yup: NPL. We are the bookmasters. If you’ve seen these shows on Netflix, or if you are just looking for some great reads, check these out.
When I first saw the trailer for Dash & Lily, I immediately put it in My List, and I had it watched less than a week later. I was sad when it ended, but then I found out it was a book (actually a series) and my day was made.
This book knows me. We are kindred spirits. Basic premise: Lily hides a book of dares at the Strand, and Dash finds it and proceeds to play her game. When I picked up the book, the first quest Lily sent Dash on was to find the book French Pianism. Friends, I own this book and could put my hands on it in 30 seconds. (I studied piano in college and my teacher was from-France French. I felt like I should know the history.) Then Lily makes Dash spritz cookies, and I had just made some the day before. See? Kindred spirits.
I love Lily and Dash, and I loved reading about them beyond the first book of dares. The second book, The Twelve Days of Dash and Lily revisits them a year later. The third book, Mind the Gap Dash and Lily sees Dash at Oxford and Lily pursuing her dog walking. I think my high school self would have been totes in love with Dash, but I like him and Lily together. Right now there are only three books, but I hope the authors write more because I need me some more Dash and Lily!
I read a lot of books, so sometimes I can be pretty cynical about them. That makes what I’m about to say even more amazing: I LOVED THIS BOOK! I wish I could read it over and over (and over). High school graduates Dimple and Rishi attend the same summer college program – Dimple to win and Rishi to meet Dimple. Unbeknownst to Dimple, her parents had set up the meeting with Rishi. Let’s just say it doesn’t go well initially, but as they work together, things change. If you only read one book for the next year - make it this one. I’m so glad that there are two more books in this series (There’s Something About Sweetie and 10 Things I Hate About Pinky).
Also, Netflix’s show based on the book is called Mismatched. I haven’t enjoyed the shows quite as much as the book because it is set in India, not California, and the actors speak Hindi. That’s not bad because I think Hindi is a beautiful language and it's fun to try and parse out meaning. But it’s different from the book, so I have to reset my mind each time I watch it, especially since I loved the book so much.
I feel like I would be remiss if I didn’t at least mention this one. The show is huge on Netflix and I didn’t realize until later that it is based on a series of books by Julia Quinn (even though my friend has been trying to get me to read these FOREVER). The books start with The Duke and I, and they have a few holds, so be prepared to wait. I’ve got my name on the list – better late than never, right? (FYI: Bridgerton is definitely for a more adult audience than Dash or Rishi. Maybe a little more Netflix and Chill…)
So there you have it friends. If you don’t have Netflix but want a great story, you’re set. If you have Netflix but want more of the story, you’re set. That’s what NPL will do for you.
