Summer Reading Suggestions from Main Adult Services

June 14, 2024

Patrons often ask, “What are you reading, what author would you recommend, etc.” So, for the Summer Reading Challenge, I decided to poll our Adult Services Team at Main and ask them what some of their favorite books are. I hope you like them!

The Nightingale

The Nightingale

It was a great story with lots of suspense, danger, love, justice, and history.

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah is a story that follows two sisters, Vianne and Isabelle, during the events of World War II.
The book was inspired by the actions of Andree de Jongh, A Belgian woman who helped Allied soldiers and pilots escape Nazi occupied areas. De Jongh was awarded the Medal of Freedom, George Medal, Order of Leopold, and others for her efforts.

The Grand Sophy

The Grand Sophy

Sophy Stanton-Lacy is one of the greatest Regency heroines ever!

The Grand Sophy by Georgette Heyer covers the life of Sophia Stanton-Lacy (Sophy). Most of her life, she travelled around Europe with her father, Sir Horace. When Sir Horace receives a temporary post in Brazil, he asks his sister to watch over Sophy and find her a husband. However, Sophy isn’t one to be tied down. This twenty-one-year-old is ready to take London in the palm of her hands.

The Starless Sea

The Starless Sea

The thing I most love about it is how it is a total love letter to the power of story.

The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern is a science fiction novel that does not have a specific plot but has a mix of narrative, folk tales, and other interesting topics in a fantasy world.

The Secret History

The Secret History

I love the atmosphere, the writing, the story - one of the few books that I continually think about.

The Secret History by Donna Tartt is her first novel. The book focuses on a close group of six students at Hampden College. One of the students, Richard Papen, narrates the book and discusses the situation that led to the murder of one of their friends, Edmund “Bunny” Corcoran.

Cherry

Cherry

I normally don’t read books like this but, this one was very good.

Cherry by Nico Walker is an autofiction novel that covers an unnamed narrator’s time in college and as a soldier during the Iraq War. While in Iraq, a traumatic event occurs that causes the narrator to start abusing opioids overseas and ramps up once he returns stateside. The narrator reconnects with an ex-girlfriend who encourages his destructive behavior. They start to rob banks to fund their habit.
