Olivia Rodrigo's Messy, Beautiful Love Story by Julyssa Lopez

"The title was one clue: You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love makes it clear that this project is a complex emotional ride, one that’ll turn platitudes and presumptions about love on their head. There were sonic Easter eggs dotting “Drop Dead,” which was also the first single, like a reference to the Cure’s “Just Like Heaven” and the hazy fuzz of guitars that she and longtime producer Dan Nigro went for, conjuring New Wave gods and the image of a lonely-hearted Robert Smith (more on him in a bit). All of it sets up something closer to real life as Rodrigo moves through the full arc of a relationship — the dreamy honeymoon phase, the first hints of conflict, the crushing goodbye — to achieve her most complete, musically adventurous album yet." -Lopez

This review of Olivia Rodrigo's newest album is a reminder that "its a great album" isn't nearly enough to sell someone on checking out your favorite work.  Lopez does a fantastic job using words to capture a medium that was always meant to be enjoyed with your ears and its an incredible talent. You'd be hard-pressed to find a better guide for a listening party as you worked your way through Rodrigo's album.

I Train So I Can Keep Doing the Things that Matter by Arnold Schwarzenegger

"As we get older, we often tell ourselves a story: Pain is inevitable, stiffness is normal and a smaller, slower life is simply the price of aging. I’ve heard this story from people around me my whole life. I’ve had shoulder surgeries, heart surgeries and a hip replacement. I know exactly what it feels like to be told your body isn’t what it used to be. Put simply, getting older sucks. But I have never accepted that aging means a smaller and slower life."- Schwarzenegger

This piece about aging and health serves as a good reminder to stay active and to continually test your limits. Arnold has clean and clear prose and that is always refreshing to read.

Social Media's Last Taboo by Kathryn Jezer-Morton

"Social media’s most embedded de facto rule is that you can’t ever feel like you’re out of options. You can’t be out of money, or on the wrong side of a decision you now regret making. This rule makes it very difficult to describe painful changes and transformations in our lives without simultaneously insisting on our own resilience. This is why we tend to admit to suffering only once the suffering is over — when the chemo has ended and the scans are clear or when the first wave of grief has subsided and we’re ready to pay tribute — and we’ve come out the other side. We announce divorces and illnesses in the style of corporate comms, reassuring our audiences that everything will be okay, that the ship is being righted as we speak." Jezer-Morton

Kathryn's writing style is unique because it is always situated in the everyday and commonplace of society and asking questions about how we navigate our social worlds. Her reflections and observations will pull you out of your own head but firmly place you back somewhere comfortably with a fresh perspective.
