Teen Read Week

October 9, 2016

Know a Teen with a broken library card? Prescription: Teen Read Week

Today kicks off Teen Read Week 2016, where teens ages 9-18 can “read off fines” by spending time reading at a public or school library. For details, see the official rules, and pick up a reading log at your school or public library. #TRW16

Got an opinionated reader at home? Get them in the election spirit by casting their vote for 2016 Teens’ Top Ten!  Teens can vote for up to three of their favorite titles now through Oct. 15. Check out the list of nominees and encourage a teen to read one during Teen Read Week, and cast their vote.

From the 26 nominees, NPL Teen Librarians have debated furiously and whittled the list down to the following 3 for our collective vote:

Joanna (Bellevue Branch) Everything, Everything is a compelling story about a girl who breaks free of her bubble. Maddy's severe combined immunodeficiency keeps her ensconced in a hermetically sealed house. Luckily for the new boy next door, Maddy’s illness hasn't taken away her wicked sense of humor. Complete with adventure, diversity and plot twists, this coming-of-age tale is a fast read!

Jessie (Madison Branch) In Six of Crows, six teenage bandits with special powers set out to pull off the ultimate heist — break into a fortress, get the goods, and get out again. The only problem is that it's never been done and to make matters worse, none of the crew trusts any of the other members. Full secrets, close calls, twists, and just enough romance, you'll want to cancel your plans and read this in one sitting.

Greg (Southeast Branch): What if the comic book character you created as a kid suddenly started appearing in graffiti art around town? And the only other soul who knows about it is your childhood best friend who you THOUGHT died in a car crash?  That’s the setup of Tennessee author Cherie Priest’s debut YA effort, I am Princess X.  Part novel, part comic, this book’s about the mysteries of losing a friend and trying to reconnect through your shared universe—in this case, Princess X, part princess, part ninja.  A trip into the seedy underground of webcomics, internet fandoms, and the dark web.  Let’s vote for Priest and encourage one of our most fertile local minds to keep writing YA!

Branches across the system will be celebrating TRW16 by hosting pizza parties and read-in’s, plus raffling off prizes to participating teens.  Winners will be announced at the end of Teen Read Week, along with the Teen Top Ten winners.
