One For Your Watchlist: Fitzwilly

December 19, 2025

Crime and Christmas are not rare companions in Hollywood. Whether it's full-on action (Die Hard), horror (Black Christmas), or dark comedy (The Ice Harvest), law-breaking and yuletide festivities often mix well in memorable films. One you may not have heard of - but should definitely try - is Fitzwilly, from 1967.

I won't spoil exactly what is going on with the household staff at Victoria Woodworth's (Edith Evans) large NYC home, but it's not completely above-board. As the chief butler, Fitzwilly (Dick Van Dyke) is relied upon to ensure that Victoria's affairs are smoothly handled, and that quality control thoughout the home regarding the rest of the staff is never in doubt. Van Dyke is marvelous in the role, effortlessly exuding confidence, charm, and a sly sense of humor, all of which should be no surprise to anyone who's seen him in literally anything else. Alongside Van Dyke is Get Smart's delightful Barbara Feldon, and a wonderful cast of character actors including John McGiver, Norman Fell, Anne Seymour, John Fiedler, and a very young Sam Waterston.

With a bit of romance, plenty of amiable comedy, and a winning John Williams theme ("Make Me Rainbows"), there's plenty to recommend. Most of the Christmas cheer is in the last half hour or so, but the cast's performances and the film's caper-adjacent shenanigans are certainly worth experiencing...it just might become a new seasonal favorite for you. Dick Van Dyke just turned 100 last week, so there's clearly no better time to pop in the DVD or head on over to Kanopy in order to appreciate one of the legend's lesser-known classics.
